Why did I start this Newsletter?
I have always loved to read and have spent hours searching for good books. I also am an author with two published books, The Last American Hero and The Persian Viper. I expended a lot of time, energy and money trying to get my books published and marketed. I decided to provide the experience and information that I have accumulated, to help you. If I can get one “AH HA” from you, while you are reading my Newsletter,  I will have succeeded.

READERS SECTION:

I don’t know about you but I do not enjoy reading fiction when it is obvious that the author is writing to impress. You know what I mean; every paragraph has a word or two that you have to look up in a dictionary. Sometimes I actually make it to the bottom of the first page before dumping the book on the reject pile.I also usually don’t care for what I call “silky stream” prose. You read the words and they are beautiful, sliding through your brain like quicksilver. When you get to the bottom of the first page you think, Boy, that was smooth, but what did it mean?

If, on the other hand, the silky stream makes sense and takes me somewhere, I’m delighted! When reading I enjoy powerful, fast moving plots, charismatic characters, snappy dialogue and vivid narrative. I try to write to that standard. I once told a friend, who is an artist, that I try to paint pictures with words. If  I have written about a location that you have been to, when you read my description I want you to think, “Exactly as I remembered”. If it is about somewhere you have never been, I want you to visualize what I am describing.

Each of you probably have favorite authors. I would like to hear from you and will pass on your recommendations.

I  enjoy reading Stuart Woods. His novels have interesting,  fast moving plots, quirky characters and situations. I particularly liked Santa Fe Rules, Dead Eyes and the Stone Barrington novels.

Pat Conroy is also one of my favorites. There were segments of Conroy’s books ( The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides and Beach Music in particular) that caused such a deep emotional response while reading that I had to put down the book and take a walk. The guy lets you look into his soul!

Reading Tom Clancy is entertaining but can  be a chore. Clancy once took ten pages to describe the nano second of activity that occurs when a nuclear device explodes. Sometimes I find myself skip reading his really technical or political stuff.

Would like to hear from the ladies. Tell me about your favorite authors.

In future Newsletters I will pass along recommendations from my reader group. These are friends and acquaintances who, like you, are avid readers. One friend reads three to four books a week. When I finished the third draft of my first novel I asked the group to read the draft for plot continuity and interest. I gave them each a red pen and asked them to show no mercy. They have provided guidance and inspiration and I love them all.

AUTHOR’S SECTION

I started writing fiction after retiring from my “career” in 1990. Visit my website www.gbmooney.com and click on the biography link if you just can’t wait another minute to know more about me.If you are a writer you will understand this; for many years I had irrepressible thoughts, ideas and plots for stories and novels banging around inside my brain. I emailed an author and told him I was writing fiction adventure/romance novels and asked for his advice. He gave back the old saw “Take two aspirins and forget about it”. He advised that fiction adventure and poetry are the most difficult genres to get published. Hence the advise to forget about it. Like every indomitable writer, I ignored his advise and proceeded with two novel writing projects. We just have to get those words recorded somewhere! Right! In future Newsletters I will take you down the tortured path I took to get published. You will, I’m sure, learn from my experience and errors.

For now I leave you with this thought; A red light should go on in your brain if a prospective “agent” or “publisher” asks you for money to read, or critique your work. There are a lot of snakes out there, eager to slither into your wallet.
